I’ve recently noticed how overjoyed my toddler is when we create a completely fictional world and play together.
My journey through a hypnotherapy course and prior knowledge of neurolinguistic programming (NLP) taught me the brain doesn’t know the difference between fact and fiction. Therefore we can easily transport ourselves to a happier situation. Using the power of our mind.
I’m sure you’ve all heard of people who undergo traumatic events, using their inner world and mental strength to get through the situation. It’s a proven technique that works. I know this because I’m well-practised in meditation, following my hypnotherapy course.
In this post, I want to explore how we can change our mindset using the power of imagination
Recreate a happy moment in the past
I’ve always taken pictures and I have picture walls dotted all around the house. I recently wrote a throwback post, detailing our summer holiday abroad. As someone who really struggles mentally in winter, it’s great to look forward to the warmer weather. Writing this post helped me feel transported back there. As if I could feel the warm rays of the sun on me. I hoped it would also help other people out there, who might be struggling right now.
Allows you to think positively
The mind is very powerful and scientific research has confirmed we only use a small part of this powerful tool. Therefore, we don’t understand everything about how the brain works.
When you imagine things going negatively for you, your subconscious mind will respond to the auto-suggestion and create a negative response pattern for you to follow.
Create the future you want to live in
The future hasn’t yet happened. Therefore we have the power to create the future we want. To view any situation from a different perspective.
You may have heard about people manifesting the future they want. Imaging yourself in a situation where you are financially abundant or moving house definitely sets you on the right track to achieve these goals.
It isn’t as simple as thinking these positive thoughts just once though. It takes hard work and repeated action to create real change. Employing the five senses to literally put yourself in the situation you would like to be in.
Maybe imagine standing in your new kitchen, of the house you’ve always dreamed of living in. The fresh bread you’ve just baked is almost ready in the oven. You look out over the well-kept garden, that your children love playing in. Children are playing in the other room and you can hear the joy in their screams whilst they are playing with balloons. You all sit down to taste the fresh bread and spend some quality time together. Many laughs and happy memories are made during this meal together.
Increase confidence and reduce anxiety
Forming a habit of positive thinking, which eventually becomes a habit, allows us to become more confident about the future. If we know things will work out well for us, what is there to be worried about? This is a very simplistic view and life definitely isn’t always that simple.
Although I still experience anxiety and probably always will, I am safe in the knowledge that I’ve survived negative life-changing circumstances over the last few years. I can and will again, should I need to. But the amazing thing is, I now have goals I want to achieve. Because I am putting the work in to achieve them. I am also confident I can achieve them.
Become more tapped into goals which fit your values and priorities
Going through my recent life-changing experiences showed me I have spent years in a career which didn’t serve my values. The impact of the stress caused by doing this job role culminated in a mental breakdown. My hypnotherapy course allowed me to finally seek out the career I wanted. By this time, I had already done some work to change careers. But now I am working in an industry which serves my main value – to help other people.
Using the power of imagination, creating repeated positive patterns and doing inner work, will all allow you to determine your true values and goals in life. What is your purpose? What are you meant to be doing? The answer will soon become clear.
Until next time
Have you utilised the power of imagination to create future goals?
Do you plan on trying this technique?
